We are jumping in our delorean, gunning it to 88mph, and
traveling back to the year that gave us "The Rachel" hair cut and
JNCO Jeans: 1995; to review the coming of age female dram-edy, Now
and Then. We try to answers some of the more serious questions
posed in the film such as, Can you get pregnant from french
kissing? and is it ever a smart idea to jump into a storm drain in
the middle of a storm?
Movie News!
RIP: Prince
The music world lost another icon with the sudden death of Prince.
Now and Then Key Points
The "Stand by Me" for Women
While Stand by Me balances coming of age comedy with the serious subject matter of death and male identity, Now and Then attempts to replicate that motif with 4 preteen girls embarking on a summer of adventure and a quest for independence.
Touches on Complex Issues but Stops Short.
The narrative touches on complex issues such as love, divorce, death, and friendship but fails to push deeper into how these very complex issues effect the characters. This is disappointing in that actors like Thora Birch, Christina Ricci, Gabby Hoffmann, and Asleigh Aston Moore are the heart and soul of the film but are not pushed further per the material.
Grown up Versions of the Main Cast are a Waste of Time.
Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore, Rita Wilson, and Rosie O'Donnell
offer nothing more than marquee filler as they only appear on
screen for 2 scenes.
The conflict between the grown up versions is never addressed.
We never know why these very close friends drifted apart as
they grew into adulthood.
An Exception to Most "Chick Flicks".
Where most "chick flicks" fall into the romance trap, Now and Then does a fantastic job of steering away from that and focusing on positive female relationships. The women in this film are independent, strong, and come into their own without resorting to only talking about men.
