The gang goes off book on an episode dissecting and even at times eviscerating the common film sequel. Sequels - Key Points
What is the purpose of the sequel?
Continue the story of the original.
To make more money
Serialized format (ie: Batman)
Built as a sequel story (Star Wars Trilogy)
More story to tell that couldn't fit in the original.
The Catch 22 of Sequels
The common idea is that sequels are ripped for being to derivative of the original and adding nothing new, yet when they are new and original they are criticized for not having the feeling of the original.
What makes a good sequel
Maintaining what works and building upon it.
No need to reinvent the wheel.
Sequels should add something new but stay within the same universe
established in the original.
What makes a terrible sequel
Being made by Joel Schumacher
Style over substance
"Check list" sequels made for the purpose of universe building and
teasing more sequels.
Some sequels surpass the original
Movies like The Godfather Part 2 and Terminator 2 are able to successfully come into their own, outside of the original, and add enough to the story that the characters evolve and change from the original.
